Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls (Audio
I bought this book to read with my almost 3 year old son, who has always loved stories I was captured by the marketing showing how few books have female protagonists I agree it s important for our children both boys and girls to grow up seeing female and male role models and I was already conscious that so many of my son s books had male or animal often male animal leading characters This book seemed an obvious choice to help even things out.I was initially sceptical about the title, which to me seems a complete contradiction of what the authors are trying to achieve These are meant to be inspirational women who are meant to inspire and have the respect of the next generation of women and men Being a rebel has implications of being naughty I don t want my son to think that for a woman to succeed she has to be a rebel This isn t even the case for many of the women in the stories, many of whom got to where they were through ambition, determination and by working really hard These are not rebellious qualities in my view I went ahead with the purchase despite this as I took the view that my son is young enough to not yet grasp the rebel concept The title would, however, put me off buying the book as a gift for an older child.Moving on to the content, when we opened the book the first story we happened to see was that of Coy Mathis, a transgender girl This book attempts to simplify and explain in childlike language each person s story I was shocked and appalled to see this one The first line is Once upon a time a boy named Coy was born Coy loved dresses, the colour pink, and shiny shoes Two sentences later Coy asks his mum When are we going to the doctor to have me fixed into a girl girl The story then has the doctor explaining about Coy being transgender, the parents winning a court case allowing Coy to use a girls bathroom at school and celebrating with a big party pink cakeand Coy wore a sparkly pink dress and beautiful pink shoes What So from my 3 year old boy s simple perspective what he learns from this story is that if you like pink and sparkly things that means you re really a girl Appalling stereotyping This story made me furious I ve spent the last 3 years making every effort to avoid my son thinking that certain toys, clothes and colours are only for girls or only for boys This story undoes that in one page as well as throwing further confusion into the mix by suggesting that if a boy likes pink and dresses the doctor will change him into a girl This is NOT an appropriate way to describe to a child what it means to be transgender It s such a shame as I love the concept behind this book, but I m shocked at how poorly judged it is It is now hidden away in a drawer and I will not be reading it to my children again. An eye opening series of one page, life stories that are written in a straight forward and inspirational but not patronising manner I ve used this book to discuss complex issues such as forced marriage and gender identity with my children I have also used examples during my adult classes to help explain stereotyping, oppression, cultural influences and the single thing I would change about this book if I could would be to call it the goodnight book OF rebel girls because saying for sort of implies it s just for girls and I think it s a valuable read for anyone. I was so disappointed with this book I read about it on the funding site and it sounded like such a good idea However, I wasn t as disappointed as my daughter Really, 1 page for each shallow, nonsensical story It was great marketing hype using the plight of inspiring young girl to line their pockets in my opinion. I bought this book based on the number of good reviews I can see this is a cleverly marketed book aimed at parents wanting to buy a book to inspire their children This book rose from crowdfunding and I believe a lot of the people giving it 5 star reviews must have to do with the crowdfunding as I cannot understand why it has so many 5 star reviews. The book design and pictures are very good I have only good things to say about the graphics and pictures But the English is poor in the writing Having one page to e.g describe Florence Nightingale written in poor English i.e it does not praise the person and celebrate their achievements well enough I could write e.g J.B, She was born poor and sold mangoes and became a famous mango seller Well, first, there is nothing interesting and nothing to inspire in this. This is no doubt a good idea The pictures are great The design is great They should have found someone who writes better to write it Bought this for various children around the 8 year old age, and it s been incredibly well received every time Love that this shows women of all races, and nationalities to inspire children I believe there is also a similar activity book and I d be intrigued to see the reviews on this I can t wait to buy this for my 5 year old nieces, and am wondering what the first age might be for them to appreciate it I even wrote the title of this book down for an 85 year old lady the other day who I was telling about this, as she was alter something different and inspiring for girls She loved the concept A brilliant idea and I would definitely recommend. Goodnight Stories For Rebel Girls is a book full of short stories of inspiring women Each story tells the tale of her passion how she became famous and any other important details about her life Each story is about a page long with stunning illustrations by some of the most talented female illustrators on the planet It is basically is a collection of short, child friendly biographies about inspiring women. My only concern is that in this book there is a transgender boy, who feels he should be a girl as he loves pink sparkly things In my opinion, this is not suitable for young readers. To conclude, this is a wonderful book, with phenomenal illustrations that every girl will love and read many times If you are considering buying this as a book, then I recommend you do as any girl would treasure this forever. This is my 100% honest review and everything written above is my opinion. There are good books, there are great books and then there our books which touch our lives in a very special ways They tell stories which inspire us, make us happy, tales which we instantly connect with, stories which make us pick the book up again and again.Today, I m writing about one such book which I recently came across The title of the book was appealing enough for me to pick it up for my little Z What I didn t know was that the stories in the book will touch my heart as much as they inspire my daughter The book is called Goodnight stories for Rebel girls It s written by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo It has illustrations by 60 female artists from across the globe.I made Z pick up her abosolute favorites and she did give me a long list after a lot of drama, according to her, how can I pick only a few I love all the stories Anyway, her favorites include Margaret Hamilton, Brenda Chapman, Ann Makosinski, Coy Mathis, Maria Montessori, Jane Austen, Cleopatra, Julia Child, Simone Billes, Ashley Fiolek, Nelly Bly and Malala Yousafzai I can t blame her for picking so many of them The length of the stories, the illustrations, the narrative, everything is perfect. We have read these stories once and we are reading it once again I know it definitely isn t the last time she is sorry we are reading it I love the message in the beginning of the the book as well To the rebel girls of the world Dream bigger, aim higher, fight harder, and when in doubt, remember you are right.I wish I had Goodnight stories for rebel girls, when I was a little girl.
