This book was an absolute pleasure, brilliantly researched but still accessible for the non specialist. Great book to read, well written and i cant put it down Excellent biography of a complex and contradictory philosopher Highly readable and engaging Buy it Excellent first biography of Seneca and a worthy complement to Miriam Griffith s earlier academic analysis of Seneca s political and philosophical oeuvre. This book traces the eventful life of Seneca, the Roman philosopher, dramatist, essayist and rhetorician of the first century CE, who came from Spain to Rome, spent his youth in Egypt, was exiled to Corsica under Claudius but recalled after eight years, and rose to dizzying heights of wealth, power and social influence under Nero, before falling from favour and being forced to kill himself The book analyzes the relationship of Senecas life story to his literary self fashioning, and the tensions between the external worlds of politics, consumerism, and social success, with the Stoic ideals of asceticism, virtue and self control I m coming to Seneca for the first time and really enjoyed this biography It seems very thoroughly researched, and is well written and engaging. Seneca had the not quite enviable job of being speech writer for the emperor Nero Having made a large fortune in the service of the Roman emperors, he attempted to withdraw from public office and give much of his wealth to Nero, but to no avail Eventually the order came for Seneca to commit suicide, which he attempted to do in the manner of Socrates, but succeeded rather less panache.Ms Wilson has written a very useful biography of the statesman, playwright and stoic philosopher The rise of Stoicism in ancient Greece is covered, as is the difference between Stoicism and Cynicism in the technical philosophical sense I found this eminently readable and my knowledge of the man and the period has been much enlarged Recommended to anyone with an interest in the Roman empire Interesting and thoughtful A autora consegue, com grande xito, realizar o processo de desconstru o do nosso imagin rio sobre Seneca por meio dos seus textos, depoimentos hist ricos e reconstru o hist rica da sociedade romana na Antiguidade. Ouvrage indispensable pour tous ceux qui s int ressent S n que et au sto cisme En plus, c est tr s bien crit.Livre remarquable tous les points de vue.
