Spectacles Spectacles is the hilarious, creative and incredibly moving memoir from much loved comedian, writer and presenter Sue PerkinsWhen I began writing this book, I went home to see if my mum had kept some of my stuff What I found was that she hadn t kept some of it She had kept all of it every bus ticket, postcard, school report from the moment I was born to the moment I finally had the confidence to turn round and say Why is our house full of this shit Sadly, a recycling incident destroyed the bulk of this archive This has meant two things firstly, Dear Reader, you will never get to see countless drawings of wizards, read a poem about corn on the cob, or marvel at the kilos of brown flowers I so lovingly pressed as a child Secondly, it s left me with no choice but to actually write this thing myselfThis, my first ever book, will answer questions such as Is Mary Berry real , Is it true you wear a surgical truss and Is a non spherically symmetric gravitational pull from outside the observable universe responsible for some of the observed motion of large objects such as galactic clusters in the universe Most of this book is true I have, of course, amplified my positive characteristics in an effort to make you like me Thank you for readingPraise for Spectacles Drama, tears and laughs Spectacles has got it all A brilliant, touching memoir suffused with love, it reminds you that life is best lived at wonky angles I ADORED it Jessie Burton, bestselling author of The Miniaturist Very funny It seems there are two Sue Perkins the TV one, who gabbles and pratfalls, and the sensitive one who aches The first of course, exists to protect the second They can both write The first writes comedy, the second tragedy in this sense, reading her memoir is very like meeting her Sunday Times It s a proper book so well written Tight bright full of inspiration Chris Evans, Radio

A lot of reviewers start by saying how much they adore Sue Perkins I m not one of them I didn t mind her back in the earlier days I quite liked Mel and Sue in Light Lunch but recently the over exposure, the relentless bap and baguette bakery double entendres and the I think it s funny to knock most of India and most of the people who live there have pushed all the wrong buttons for me.BUT despite not much liking the woman I thought I d give her book a read.On the plus side, it s not badly written that Cambridge degree did count for something after all.On the negative side, you can drive a Sherman tank through the gaps in the story There s a point where she makes a throw away comment about being at the Edinburgh fringe since she was 14 years old but absolutely no explanation how or why Her comedic success is played down with than even classic British understatement would demand.Somehow she manages to write a lot and say very little. What will you know by the end That she adores Mel, that Mel is 2 years yes two years older than her, that she loves her parents but expresses that love by taking the piss out of them at every possible opportunity, and that she s very tight lipped on anything that could really be classed as personal. She s so self consciously smugly funny that I find it hard to enjoy But as I said most of the words are spelled correctly and I m feeling relatively kind because I didn t like her less afterwards than I did before I just didn t feel that she revealed anything or that she was being entirely honest with herself or her readers.

I very much doubt folk will read this review, which is probably just as well I rate Sue I really do and this does not in any way affect my opinion of her.Personally I do not think that her sharp, incisive and sardonic wit relates well to the pages It doesn t transfer very well.I could listen to her for hours but could not read it.That s my POV

I started out reading the book with an inherent liking if not admiration for Sue Perkins and ended up really rather disliking her It is not funny not sure it was intended to be It is rambling and random and I m certain only got into print because she is famous She comes across as really quite unpleasant at times unlike the sympathetic person she seemed to be on her interesting journey through India I hope that was the real person and not this shallow self obsessed person the book portrays.

I have always liked Sue Perkins and decided to take a break from my usual murder mystery books and read this book Well ,talk about laugh out loud moments it is brilliantly funny with a smattering of poignant moments It is eloquently written and Sue s ability to describe even the most excruciating moments in her life with such candor is refreshing I loved it so much and wanted to share it with my partner who doesn t read books that I downloaded the audio version, read by the author herself and we have both thoroughly enjoyed every chapter, so much so we were sad when it ended I downloaded her other book in the audio version, East of Croydon and we are savouring every chapter.Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good laugh and wants to know a little about Sue Perkins Thank you Sue and please keep writing.

Bought because it was a book club read Have to say I absolutely loved it I could hear Sue s voice in my head as I read it Did feel that the ending was a little rushed Would have liked to about her subsequent travels to India etc but maybe another book The book was in very good condition and was signed by the author Shame the person didn t want to hold onto it I promised my copy to someone in the US in my book club so it has arrived and been gratefully received The book will be almost as well travelled as Sue All I can say is if anyone says Mind the sides Bert it s guaranteed to make me chuckle
